About Deborah Lang

Local Upbringing & Education

Deborah grew up in Newark, Ohio and her family has deep roots in the community. Her father owned a small business in downtown Newark for thirty years and her family has lived in Licking County since the 1800’s.

She graduated from Newark High School and attended The Ohio State University where she received a bachelor’s degree in communications. While there, she was awarded the Excellence in Outreach and Education Award for her participation in the creation of a nationally recognized youth outreach program.

Deborah earned her law degree from Case Western Reserve School of Law. She was co-captain of the National Moot Court Competition Team, an associate editor for the Law Review, and a legal writing advisor to her peers. She spent her free time volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Rainbow Babies Children’s Hospital, where she spent time with sick kids whose parents were not able to be with them during their hospital stay.

Accomplished Legal Career

Magistrate Deborah Lang graduated law school in 2006 and went into private practice in Cleveland, Ohio where she represented local and international clients on a variety of issues. During her time in private practice, she served as an adjunct Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve School of Law, where she taught students about family law as well as client interaction and trial practice. Deborah has a particular interest in alternative dispute resolution, and completed extensive mediation training during this period.

In 2011, Deborah accepted an opportunity to move back to her hometown and serve Licking County. She was appointed as a Magistrate of the Domestic Relations Court by Judge Craig Baldwin (now a judge on the 5th District Court of Appeals) and Judge Richard Wright. For the last eight years she has managed a very busy docket, presiding over hundreds of cases from inception to conclusion and issuing thousands orders and decisions that directly impact children and families.

Serving on the bench Deborah witnesses firsthand the devastation caused by rising drug addiction and domestic violence. She sees how these issues impact the community at large, and how these problems are growing rapidly. Deborah is passionate about serving the citizens of Licking County and ensuring it remains a safe place for people to raise their families.

Invested in Family & Community

Deborah’s husband Jonathan serves on Newark City Council and both are committed to lives of public service and teaching their two children the value of giving back to others. Deborah is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association where she serves on the Judicial Administration and Legal Reform Committee and is a graduate from their Leadership Academy. She is a faculty member of the Judicial College for the Supreme Court of Ohio, and a graduate of the Jo Ann Davidson Institute.

Conservative Judicial Philosophy

In becoming the next Licking County Municipal Court Judge, Deborah Lang will be able to use her experience and legal knowledge to more directly impact domestic violence and drug addiction issues in the community. She is a conservative who believes in limited government and that the role of the judiciary is to simply ‘call balls and strikes’ (to quote Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts) not legislate.

However, she also has the experience to understand that the role of a judge at a local level is much more challenging because a local judge must be a leader in the community and has to deal with people at a very personal level. A municipal court judge must understand and be invested in the community they serve.

She has seen how drug addiction and domestic violence affect children and families. She has many years of experience presiding over high-conflict cases involving children and other victims of these issues. Deborah understands that we need to focus on helping the people struggling with these issues, to minimize the damage caused within families as well as in our community.
